Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain

This joint, which can be felt in front of the ear by opening and closing your mouth, can cause acute and chronic pain called Temperomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ). Muscles surrounding this joint include temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles that allow chewing and talking.

Causes:
The source of Temperomandibular Joint Pain is not always known. Often causes are due to trauma, bruxism (grinding teeth), or teeth clenching. Due to it’s location, improper teeth care affects how the TMJ moves.

Risk Factors:
Risk factors include stress (increases bruxism and teeth clenching), history of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Poor personal hygiene for oral care.

Signs and Symptoms:

~ Popping or clicking when opening your mouth
~ Jaw becomes locked or difficult to move with pain on one side or both TMJ

~ Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
~ Ear ache
~ Neck and Shoulder Pain

Tests:
Orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic exams are performed for proper diagnosis.
For self test, sit in front of a mirror and open your mouth as wide as possible. If deviation or movement favors one side with pain felt, or if popping or clicking is heard.
