The shoulder is a complex joint which is attatched to the body primarily by muscles, making it unique. Support is given by rotator cuff, bicep, tricep, back, and pectoral muscles. When injury occurs, pain and inflammation increase causing discomfort with movement and difficulty performing needed activities.
Causes:
The source of shoulder pain is often due to irritation of the muscles and tendons supporting the shoulder resulting in inflammation or tendonitis. Injury to any muscle causes compensation by other muscles. This imbalance, if not treated, can cause years of pain and frustration. More severe causes include trauma, dislocation, torn rotator cuff, and fractures.
Risk Factors:
Prevention is the best method for keeping the shoulder strong enough to prevent injury.
Risk factors include deconditioning of the muscles due to lack of exercise, repetative movements for an occupation, and improper posture.
