Antibiotics: Not used For Your Health

A WebMD article found at the addres below, revealed astonishing information regarding the usage of antibiotics. An alarming 80% are used on animals (in particular livestock). In humans, these bactria fighting drugs are usually taken for 10 days, ensuring each dosage is properly taken to elimate all harmful bacteria from the body. However, it is known that this also affects healthy and needed bacteria in the abdomen necessary for absorption of food and production of Vitamin K. In animals, two main reasons are found for the long term, low dosage usage of antibiotics in animals. First of all, with the blockage of disease animals can grow to a larger size, making them grow larger even if they do not eat more food. The other is to promote animal health.

The biggest concern comes from the fear of a superbug, resistant to current antibiotics that we have available. If a superbug was to form, it potentially could cross from attacking livestock, to attacking humans.

The FDA, CDC, and World Health organization all warn against the continued usage of antibiotics in animals.

With this information, you would think more research would be conducted. However, the FDA’s response stated it cost to much to ban antibiotics and to enforce such a ruling. Instead they are asking for ‘voluntary stoppage of antiobiotic usage.’ The recommendations utilized today are still based on information from 1977.

In my opinion, this will not make any difference. It is cheaper to produce larger cattle with a bigger profit return than it would be to utilize natural grazing techniques.

When will we start looking at what is good for people and not for corporate profit.
